Ah, spring! The season that affords us the opportunity to refresh, renew and… declutter. Open the windows and the closet doors, folks. Time to get down to some spring cleaning.
For many people, a large part of the spring cleaning project includes a clothing purge. Over the last year, you probably have a few sweaters that shrunk in the wash, some jeans that don’t fit anymore, and some trendy pieces that should probably be burned. But after purging all those items, you may find that you still have plenty of clothes that need somewhere to go.
Spring is the perfect time to store your winter items and reclaim your summer items. Using a climate-controlled self storage facility is an easy and affordable way to gain some extra closet space. Here are a few tips to help you get organized.
What to store during Summer months:
- Sweaters
- Jackets
- Boots
- Hats, gloves, scarves
- Furs (climate-control is a must!)
- Any pieces with snowflakes, reindeer or other “wintery” patterns
What to store during Winter months:
- Summer dresses
- Shorts and skirts
- Flip flops/sandals
- Any pieces with palm trees, overly bright colors or other “summery” patterns
How to prep your seasonal clothes for self storage:
- Take an inventory of everything you are putting in you self storage unit. You just might have to pull an item if you are going on a ski trip in July or a beach vacation in February.
- Try to keep most of your items folded to prevent misshaping, but if you need to hang items, make sure to secure the piece using extra hang tags and hanger loops.
- Avoid using mothballs as they are dangerous for kids (and they smell horrible anyway). Instead use cedar blocks to help preserve your clothes.
- You can store the items in plastic bins, but make sure they are clean and free of bugs before you seal them. Otherwise, use an old suitcase.
